“It seems like cloud is no longer a luxury after all, right?”
You might have probably dropped this question to your GM/CEO, as the owner of the IT process, after implementing Office 365 and moving out from your legacy on-premise email server.
Understanding that Cloud in 2018, is no longer that grey area which we fear to explore, is a necessity we should comprehend. If you still do not have Office 365 till today, it is not too late to do it.
In the same sense, all of the new technology advancements you would see over the social networks as Big Data, Automation Solutions, Paperless Business Processes, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning … those were all built natively on cloud, for cloud.
“So, to double my revenue I need more IT people, that’s what you mean? – No.”
If you see the growth of your company, in the next five years, is directly proportional to how much you invest in technology, then you are probably right. If you see that expanding your business is fully dependent now on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Automation, then are absolutely on the right track.
The way to reach the above point, is by being more familiar with Cloud Infrastructure. You are probably mistaken if you are under the impression that only Cloud is the future, Cloud on its own is not the future. Cloud is the underlying technology which will be your door to AI, ML and automation. The ability to operate at a massive scale with minimal cost of ownership, is the future of technology.
Probably you are now thinking about the future of your datacenter, and how you can build an AI-based application with ML on your hardware. It will work, but do not expect a 1982 Zastava to sprint on 200 Km/Hr just because you installed a Ferrari engine. It will not be sustainable as it was not built for it.
“Where should I begin from?”
A one million dollar question. Understanding that you have a problem is the best part out of it, now let us work on understanding how you can have a smooth transition from your traditional hardware datacenter to your millennial next-generation datacenter on cloud.
- Understanding the breadth of the existing IT landscape
It is not just that someone is selling cloud infrastructure to you and got your attention, understand what you have and the profiling of each application before you even take the next step
- Analyzing the ins and outs of each application
It is no big deal to sit down, get a paper and pen and see how each application functions. This will help you understand the readiness of this application to sit on cloud and relief yourself from its operational headache
- Understand when Cloud Infrastructure is NOT the right option
Yes, Cloud Infrastructure may not be the perfect fit for your applications. It will only result in more challenges if you had not done a great job in point (2). Eliminating is better than qualifying at this point of time.
- Choosing the right Technology Partner
We know you had invested in an IT team in-house, but you still need a trusted adviser, who probably had done this a 100 times before, to help you with the best practices and will support in removing all the potential roadblocks you were never aware of.
- Feel the measurable difference
Implementing a case study to calculate total savings and the total cost of ownership (TCO) is a must. If you do not understand how much you are going to save in terms of time, resources, money and headache, please revise your process.
It is a long journey, but it pays off when you reach of the absolute goal of modernizing your datacenter and totally transforming your digital approach.
